Saphlux Presented NPQD Micro-LED Solutions at SPIE Photonics West 2023

San Francisco, February 2, 2023 -- SPIE Photonics West 2023 was held today at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California. Companies and research institutes around the world were gathered to showcase their latest work in the field of photonics. Saphlux was invited to the conference and Dr. Jie Song, the company’s VP of engineering, presented at the session of optoelectronic technology and applications (OPTO). The title of his presentation is “A high-efficiency full-color monolithic micro-LED displays for AR/MR/VR applications using the NPQD®️ (Nanoporous GaN with Quantum Dots) technology”.

In his report, Dr. Song introduced the fabrication of full-color micro-LEDs monolithically by loading green and red quantum dots (QDs) into nano-porous GaN. Leveraging the strong light scattering effect from the nano-porous structure, the absorption rate of blue pumping light by QDs increased significantly comparing with conventional QD organic film. 48% power conversion efficiency from blue to red light was achieved at a 2.5µm pixel size. A full-color micro-LED display driven by a CMOS with a sub-pixel size of 5µm using NPQD technology was also demonstrated.

"We’re very glad to say that the feasibility and advantages of NPQD micro-LED technology have now been proved." said Dr. Song. "This innovation may help the industry to address the long-standing issues, including the poor red efficiency at small LED size and difficulty in the fabrication of full-color micro-LED. Our technology will facilitate the commercialization of micro-LED displays in AR, MR, and VR.  We believe a true immersive experience is within reach."
